Underneath the Riviera’s sculpted lines beat the heart of a true American powerplant. Standard was the 401 cu in (6.6 L) “Nailhead” V8, affectionately known as the Wildcat 445, good for 325 hp and 445 lb-ft (330 PS, 603 Nm) of torque. That’s where the “445” came from — not cubic inches, but the mountain of torque it delivered at 2,800 rpm. Buick paired it with a Super Turbine 400 automatic transmission, making even a casual throttle press feel like an invitation to glide through time.

Cars trimmed in leather also came with upgraded door panels featuring full-length wood veneer inserts and elongated armrests, replacing the standard brushed-aluminum accents. That detail alone transformed the Riviera from a luxury coupe into something approaching an art installation on wheels.
